 AVOIDABLE RISK FACTORS

Cigarette Smoking | Elevated Blood Fat Levels

High Blood Pressure | Physical Inactivity | Stress

When your doctor attempts to determine your chance of developing heart disease, he or she will ask you questions and order tests to assess what risk factors you have. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chance of developing heart disease. If you can identify and then control your risk factors, you can help prevent or delay the development and progression of heart disease.

Obesity

Excess weight increases heart disease risk. One way to determine if you’re overweight is to calculate your body mass index (BMI, a measure of your weight in relation to your height) by multiplying your weight in pounds by 703 and then dividing the result by the square of your height in inches. You are overweight if your BMI is between 25 and 29.9 and obese if it is 30 or more.

You can also determine your BMI by using an online BMI calculator.

What You Should Do: Control your weight. Combining a reduced-calorie diet with regular physical activity will give you an excellent chance of losing weight and maintaining that weight loss over the long term. Weight loss is the most effective way to lower triglyceride levels and raise HDL cholesterol. In addition, weight loss is an important way to lower blood pressure and prevent and treat type 2 diabetes.

To lose weight, you will need to expend more calories than you consume. A healthy weight loss is 0.5 to 2 pounds a week. To achieve this goal, you will need to eat 250 to 1,000 fewer calories a day. Experts recommend that people who need to lose weight or maintain weight loss should engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week. If you can comfortably exercise for 30 minutes, try to gradually increase your daily exercise duration to one hour.
