Symptoms and Complications of Heart Disease

Many people are unaware they have heart disease or are even susceptible to it, particularly if they haven’t seen a doctor regularly to undergo routine screening tests such as a lipid profile, which measures amounts of triglycerides and “good” and “bad” cholesterol in the blood. In fact, up to 25% of people with heart disease have no symptoms despite insufficient blood flow to the heart—a condition called silent heart disease.

Heart attack. Complete blockage of a coronary artery interrupts blood flow to a portion of the heart muscle, causing death of heart tissue.

Angina. An episode of chest pain that results from reduced blood flow to the heart. Also known as angina pectoris.

Heart failure. The heart is no longer able to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.
