Predicting Ischemic Heart Disease In Women: The Value Of Endothelial Function.

Lian BQ, Keaney JF Jr.

J Am Coll Cardiol. 2010 Apr 20;55(16):1688-96.

Abstract: Endothelial dysfunction is an important component in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. The ability to assess the endothelium in a meaningful manner has been the subject of intense investigation over decades. The function of endothelial cells is a gauge of vascular health and assessment of vascular function is emerging as a useful tool for predicting cardiovascular risk.

In this editorial in the Journal, Drs. Lian and Keaney comment on the study by Matsuzawa et al (Matsuzawa Y, Sugiyama S, Sugamura K, et al. Digital assessment of endothelial function and ischemic heart disease in women. J Am Coll Cardiol 2010;55:1688 –96.), noting that EndoPAT may serve as a simple measure to integrate risk factor burden and to reflect microvascular endothelial function, and that it has the potential for wide clinical application, should it be found to predict risk of future cardiac events.
